Auto.Complete adds a business typeahead to your own product. As an applicant types their company name, they see matching businesses from official Secretary of State records and pick theirs from the list — no typos, no guessing, and no wrong-entity matches when you run KYB. For setup, code samples and a live demo, go to sdk.baselayer.com. This page explains how the product works so you know what you’re building.

How Auto.Complete Works

Auto.Complete is built so your API key never reaches the browser:
  1. Your backend opens a session. It calls POST /autocomplete/sessions with your API key and receives a short-lived session token.
  2. The browser asks for suggestions. As the applicant types, your page calls GET /autocomplete/businesses with that session token and shows the suggestions it returns.
  3. The applicant picks their business. Each suggestion carries a token that identifies exactly that business.
  4. You run KYB on the pick. Pass the token as business_token on POST /searches, and the search runs against the business the applicant chose.
The business_token is valid for 15 minutes and only for your organization. Sessions are short-lived and the SDK refreshes them for you.

What Each Suggestion Includes

  • The business’s name, and the DBA or other name that matched what was typed
  • Its home (domicile) state and the other states it is registered in
  • Its business structure (for example LLC, C_CORPORATION, SOLE_PROPRIETORSHIP)
  • Related people and addresses, so applicants can recognise the right business
You can narrow suggestions by state, home state, business structure, officer or registered agent name, and address.

Use the SDK

The fastest way to integrate is the Baselayer JavaScript/TypeScript SDK, @baselayer-sdk/autocomplete. It:
  • Opens and refreshes sessions for you, and retries when a session lapses or a rate limit is hit
  • Includes a ready-made, fully restyleable React component
  • Includes a server helper so your API key stays on your backend
See sdk.baselayer.com for installation, examples and the full request reference.

Getting Access

Auto.Complete is enabled per organization. Contact your Baselayer representative to turn it on or to book a demo.
The original GET /autocomplete endpoint was retired on September 25, 2026. If you integrated with it, see the migration notice.
